What to Do When a Tree Falls on Your House

The first steps to take in the minutes and hours after a tree comes down on your home.

Updated November 1, 2026 · Tuscaloosa Tree Services

Short answer

Get everyone out of the damaged part of the house and away from any downed power lines. Call 911 if anyone is hurt or a line is down. Then call your electric utility, your insurance company and a tree service, and take photos before anything is moved.

1. Make everyone safe

Move people and pets out of rooms under the tree. A fallen tree can shift as its weight settles, and ceilings can give way. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas company or 911 from outside.

2. Stay away from power lines

Treat every downed line as live, and do not touch the tree if it is in contact with one. Call the utility right away. In most of Tuscaloosa that is Alabama Power. Tree crews cannot safely start until the line is made safe.

3. Document the damage

Before anything is moved, photograph the tree, the roof, the inside of the house and any damaged cars or fences from several angles. Keep receipts for anything you spend to protect the house, such as tarps.

4. Call your insurance company

Open a claim and ask what they need from you. Many policies help pay to remove a tree that has damaged a covered structure. Ask whether they want to see the damage before the tree is removed.

5. Call a tree service

Do not try to cut a tree off a roof yourself. Trunks and limbs pinned against a house are often under heavy tension, and one cut can make them spring or drop. Crews take the tree off in sections, using rigging or a crane so the roof is not damaged further.

6. Protect the house

Once the tree is off, the roof can be tarped to keep rain out until repairs. Your insurer can tell you whether temporary repairs are covered.
